Being a mystery writer, when I see the phrase just desserts I think about the old expression meaning something that is deserved or merited - the villain is punished and justice is served. Most people, however, who hear the word desserts think of cake, cookies, candy, pie, ice cream. . .I don't blame them.
Yes, I have a sweet tooth. I'm also into baking. Sometimes, I don't sleep well, so I get up and bake. I bake for hours at a time, but the baked goods never go to waste - especially at this time of year with all of the special occasions - the birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, picnics, festivals, and bake sales. When I ask "what may I bring?" I'm often told "just bring desserts."
Here's the recipe for one of my favorite, quick-to-make cakes. Try it, you'll love it.
Texas Toffee Cake
One Box Devil’s Food Cake Mix
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 container caramel topping
1 container Cool Whip
Prepare and bake the cake according to package directions. Allow to cool, but while still warm poke holes in top of cake and drizzle with one can of sweetened condensed milk and ½ container caramel topping. Frost with Cool Whip and sprinkle with toffee bits. Refrigerate.
