So what do you do when you live in a vacation destination? Well, you leave town, of course. Many of my clients are planning trips and most of them travel with their pets. So, if you're traveling with your pet, I'll share the advice I always give them.
First off, check in advance on what the rules are for pet travel. It varies and some cases smaller pets may be allowed in the cabin, while other, larger pets, are housed in other areas. Ask about what's allowed and what's not and exactly what the environment will be like.
Make an appointment with your vet for a check-up and to make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date. It's a good idea to carry your pet's medical information with you.
Book a direct flight whenever you can. It decreases the travel time and the chances for problems.
Make sure you have the right crate or carrier for your pet and that the carrier has proper identification. You can also make the trip easier if you line the carrier with soft bedding and include a favorite toy to give a sense of familiarity.
Take a walk with your pet before boarding. It will help them to expend energy and may help them to rest during the trip.
Just as you make sure you've packed for all of your needs, make sure you have everything your pet needs such as any medications and special foods.
As you can see, it's all about planning ahead so take some time as you're booking your trip to make sure your furry family member is ready for travel. Then you can both enjoy your get-away!
