Travel Plans

By Caro Lamont from Sparkle Abbey's Pampered Pets Mysteries

I hear it's been a tough winter in some parts of the country. I'm originally from Texas (before my move to southern California) so I've not experienced a true winter like some of you all deal with on a regular basis so I can only imagine. Now with summer on the way I'll bet a lot of you are looking to get-away for a bit. Here in Laguna Beach we always see a big increase in visitors in the summer months.

So what do you do when you live in a vacation destination? Well, you leave town, of course. Many of my clients are planning trips and most of them travel with their pets. So, if you're traveling with your pet, I'll share the advice I always give them.

First off, check in advance on what the rules are for pet travel. It varies and some cases smaller pets may be allowed in the cabin, while other, larger pets, are housed in other areas. Ask about what's allowed and what's not and exactly what the environment will be like.

Make an appointment with your vet for a check-up and to make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date. It's a good idea to carry your pet's medical information with you.

Book a direct flight whenever you can. It decreases the travel time and the chances for problems.

Make sure you have the right crate or carrier for your pet and that the carrier has proper identification. You can also make the trip easier if you line the carrier with soft bedding and include a favorite toy to give a sense of familiarity.

Take a walk with your pet before boarding. It will help them to expend energy and may help them to rest during the trip.

Just as you make sure you've packed for all of your needs, make sure you have everything your pet needs such as any medications and special foods.

As you can see, it's all about planning ahead so take some time as you're booking your trip to make sure your furry family member is ready for travel. Then you can both enjoy your get-away!

Sparkle Abbey is actually two people, Mary Lee Ashford and Anita Carter, who write the national best-selling Pampered Pets cozy mystery series. They are friends as well as neighbors so they often get together and plot ways to commit murder. (But don't tell the neighbors.) They love to hear from readers and can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, their favorite social media sites.

  1. Some good advice. The hint about the shot verification is really important too if you are going to a national or state park which has stricter regulations on pets. We definitely travel with our furbaby. He has his own list of things to pack and do prior to a trip. We also make sure to pack a couple of his favorite toys so he can feel like he's bringing part of home with him. :)

  2. Thanks for the tips. It was such a delightful treat to have you both on the panel at Malice. So happy to hear that Betty is based on a real live human being . . . I want to be like her when I'm that old!
