Summer Street Fest Time

Character: Cathy McCall
Series: Vintage Toyshop Mysteries
Author: Barbara Early

Cathy McCall here. And boy, are my feet tired! (And swollen. It's truly sad how one pregnancy can change your body. Add a little heat--okay, a lot of heat--and my ankles are tree trunks.)

Don’t get me wrong. I love all the street festivals we have here in East Aurora, NY. They bring in lots of business and new customers.  Even the Taste of East Aurora, which features the local eateries, brings in a few heads to Well Played, our vintage toyshop.

And it's not like I'm doing all the work by myself. Dad is here of course, and my sister-in-law Liz is a marvel managing the store. And my husband pitches in too, when he can get off work at the wildlife center.

But the East Aurora Sidewalk Sale, kind of like the Black Friday in July for our local businesses, is our big one. We have a nice little tent close to our shop—and just downwind of the wonderful aromas coming from Wallace’s. (Is that ribs I smell?) But out comes all our merchandise which might tempt the impulse buyers. A few old Barbies, slinkies, some not-too-old Fisher Price, and other playable toys. The things we’d like to sell, but nothing too valuable that we’d cry if it walked off. The collectors are still welcome to come in the shop.

Not that we have a big shoplifting problem in East Aurora, but kids will pick up things, and parents aren’t always paying attention…

Now if we can keep Dad from spending too much time at the Masonic Lodge where the Fisher Price collectors are selling the excess from their collection, we might even break even.

If you're in the greater Suffolk, Virginia, area, author Barbara Early will be at the Suffolk Mystery Authors Festival on August 10th!

  1. My baby brother had that dog pull toy! Good luck at the festival!

  2. I remember that dog pull toy too. Hope the sidewalk sale is successful.
