Summertime Celebrations - A Dog's View

by Dogbert, Caro Lamont's dog in Sparkle Abbey's Pampered Pets Mysteries

There have been a lot of celebrations going on around here and I don't know exactly what they're about , but I have to tell you I'm not so wild about some of them. Fireworks are definitely not my thing. I get that some people like them, but for me they are just loud and scary.

That's why I'm glad my human-mom, Caro, stays inside with me when there are fireworks. We usually watch a movie together. Thelma and Louise, my feline family members, always say they're going to watch with us, but it never fails...they fall asleep and the movie has barely started. I honestly don't think they've ever seen the end of a movie.

Not me, I sit right with Caro and watch until the very end. She's partial to old movies and I don't mind them. I'm mostly about sitting with her and having movie snacks.

One of my favorite snacks is her Apple Pupcakes. I've asked her to share it with you so it's included below. You know, give me some movie snacks and a cuddle on the couch, and I'm good.

Caro's Apple Pupcakes

2-3/4 cups water
1/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 scant teaspoon vanilla extract
1 medium egg
4 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup dried apple chips (unsweetened)
1 tablespoon baking powder

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F).
Mix water, applesauce, honey, egg, and vanilla together in a bowl.
Add remaining ingredients and mix until well blended.
Pour into lightly greased muffin pans.
Bake 75 minutes for standard-sized muffin and 40 minutes for mini-sized muffins.
Let cool before frosting. For frosting you can use plain yogurt or cottage cheese that has been run through the blender until creamy.

Special note from Caro:
I always clear my clients for allergies before giving any of my homemade treats. And then I make a notation of any allergies on their charts. So, be sure and check on allergies before you share with other pets.

Sparkle Abbey is actually two people, Mary Lee Ashford and Anita Carter, who write the national best-selling Pampered Pets cozy mystery series.

They are friends as well as neighbors so they often get together and plot ways to commit murder. (But don't tell the other neighbors.)

They love to hear from readers and can be found on FacebookTwitter, and Pinterest, their favorite social media sites.

  1. My sweet Tyler hates fireworks and thunder and a few other things too. We did not enjoy all that booming and now we are in the midst of thunder storm season. Oh well, we do what we can. Thanks for the recipe. Will have to try it!

  2. My yourkie mix, Teddy doesn't understand where the noises are coming from and barks at the noise. Thanks for the recipe.
