We've all got those friends who tell you eeeverything. When they phone, you settle in for a long listen, because they will tell you what they did, from the time they got up to the time they went to bed. They tell you: who they saw, what they talked about, how that person looked, who else they saw, where they went shopping, what they bought, what they had for lunch... it's exhausting at times, but soothing, in a way. They mostly just want to be listened to, and I'm good with that. Heidi is kind of like that; she'll tell me everything in detail, and in sequence, I just have to listen and fill in the 'mhmmms'.

But then there are those other friends who don't call at all, so you call them, and when you do it's like they get a prize for saying the least. My writer friend Melody Heath is like that. I've recently discovered there are vast areas of her life I have no clue about because she just isn't much of a talker and sharer. When I asked why that was, she said it's because she doesn't want to bore anyone with the mundane details of her life. Like... the fact that her husband is a weirdo stalkerish kinda control freak dude. I mean, I knew some of that beforehand; the guy was invited to my wedding, but he didn't come. Instead, he dropped Mel off, then picked her up, so she didn't really get to enjoy my wedding at all. She doesn't drive so she was dependent on him for a ride, and he held it over her, using it as a tool to control her.

I don't like him. It makes me nervous for her, seeing how Andrew is with her, but she never ever gave me any clue about that before I figured it out for myself.

Really, it's a little annoying. I love her and I want to know what's going on in her life, but Mel doles out life events as if there's a penalty for sharing.

So I think with her I'll have to pay more attention and dig for details, ask questions, probe a little.

Do you have friends like that... ones who talk relentlessly and overshare, and ones who you have to pry information out of? What do you do abut the ones who don't want to 'burden you with their troubles'?
