Every Holmes Needs a Watson--And Every Spring Needs a Givewaway

Character: Frankie Grennan
Title: Execution in E (Book 5)
Series: The Gethsemane Brown Mysteries
Author: Alexia Gordon

Hi. I’m Francis Grennan, Frankie to everyone but my parents. I teach mathematics at St. Brennan’s Boys’ School in Dunmullach, a small town in southwestern Ireland, near Cork.
That is, I used to teach. Right now, school’s shut down due to this bloody pandemic. Oh well, it’s for the best and I’m not much of a people person, anyway.  You might call me a curmudgeon. Or a misanthrope, if I’m having a particularly a bad day. I don’t mind staying home. I’ve got my music to keep me company. I’m listening to my collection of jazz albums—vinyl, of course. Miles Davis is my favorite.

Speaking of music, I’m working on improving my social skills, thanks to my friend, Gethsemane Brown, St Brennan’s music director. Sissy’s—I call her Sissy to tease her—a classical musician from the States who turned up in the village after a string of bad luck. We didn’t hit it off when we first met. Couldn’t stand each other. But Sissy grows on you. She’s got a knack for solving mysteries and a knack for convincing you to help her. I admit I enjoy playing Watson to her Holmes, even when our snooping lands us in a tight spot.

No mysteries to solve right now, though. The pandemic’s even keeping the bad guys at home. I’m lounging in my Miles Davis t-shirt—I won’t give it up, I don’t care how worn out Sissy complains it is—listening to records and reading the books someone’s published about Sissy’s crime solving adventures. I’m in them, and so is our favorite Garda, Inspector Niall O’Reilly, and Father Tim, the parish priest. There’s the school and the pub and Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrows, really, the whole village. A bit strange, reading about yourself.

I’m going to give one lucky winner in the US, Sissy’s home country, the chance to read about us. The winner gets two copies of any books in the series. I’ll include a list of ‘em all at the end of this post. Choose ebooks if you want them right away. If you don’t mind waiting ‘til restrictions ease up, choose print copies—and I’ll throw in a bit of free swag as a bonus.

To enter the giveaway, comment on this post with your favorite musician. Don’t forget to include your email (but spell out “at” and “dot”—the yourname [at] yourdomain [dot] com—to sneak past the spambot). Leave your comment by 11:59 PM, Central Time, Sunday, April 26. I’ll randomly select a winner in the US and notify them by email.

I’ve got a little something for everyone, no entry needed. Here’s a Miles Davis playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xlsumoglrCTveeWhJth8Y?si=uAyJiP_jSO2YvCSdapBrOg
Hope you enjoy him as much as I do.

  44. Love Louis Armstrong! To this day no one can play a jazz trumpet or sing "What a Wonderful World” like him. When it comes on, no matter what I'm doing or where I'm at, I just have to stop and listen.

Thank you for the fabulous chance to win two of your books! The musical theme would fit in great here in my town. You see we are the Folk Music Capital and there is everything doing with music here just about everywhere from March to November. Well, expect for this year because of what the nation is going through.
