I've made up my mind!

Gloria Bonatti from the Zodiac Mysteries by Connie di Marco

Yes, I have.  I’m determined.  I’m going to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.  Do you know that I’m a native?  We are a pretty rare group.  I was born in San Francisco and I’ve lived here my entire life and I’ve never walked across the Golden Gate bridge.  That’s a shame and I’m embarrassed to admit it.
I really have to do this.  Do you know that the Bridge sings now?  Yup, it does.  The engineers changed the railings for better wind passage.  It never occurred to them that the Bridge would start to hum and sing and make a really loud noise!  You can hear it here.

So I’m excited.  I’ve decided to be a tourist in my own city!  I told my granddaughter Julia, you know the astrologer, what I intended to do.  She had a hissy fit!  She didn’t want me to do it.  She didn’t say as much, but what she really meant is she thinks I’m too old.  She thinks I won’t be able to do it both ways.  Across the bridge to Marin County and back again.  It’s only 1.7 miles each way.  That’s nothing.  I’ve done more walking when I’m out shopping, for heaven’s sake.

I told her she has no idea how tough I am!  What does she think, that I’m a delicate fading violet who never leaves the kitchen?  She has no idea what I can do.  So phooey on her.  I’m walking.  Both ways.  I don’t care what Julia thinks.  I’ll take a taxi to the south side Visitors Center if I have to.  And even if my feet are sore, so what?  I’ll soak them when I get home.  I don’t care how cold or windy or foggy it is, I’m going to do this.

Anyway, Julia apologized for saying I couldn’t make it both ways.  I can and I will.  Then she said she was coming with me.  So that’s our big excursion for next weekend.  I’ll bet you anything I hold up better than my granddaughter!

  3. I have visited San Francisco several times and have walked across the GG Bridge to Marin County twice. But I did not know about those sounds. It was the windy conditions that I remember!

    You can do it!

    1. Hi Grace, yes, it's very windy! Anywhere near the ocean. The sounds are new though. The engineers changed the hand rails recently and that's what's causing it. And congratulations to you ~ you've done the walk!

  4. I didn't know foot traffic was allowed to walk on the bridge. But I have to be honest, the sound is really creepy.

    1. Hi Kim ~ Yes, I think the sound is bugging a lot of people. We'll see if they fix that. It'd be nice if it was more musical or something like whale song, wouldn't it? And you can actually walk and bike on the bridge!
